Audacity records only from end of prior recording.

Very simple question here.

After using Audacity for years on my desktop at home I also downloaded it to my laptop now and it doesn’t work as it should.
Usually when I record something and place the vertical line with a left mouseclick inside that recording, and then click record; then a second audio track pops up and the second recording starts exactly where I have but the vertical line into the first one.

Now, on the laptop, no new audio track pops up and recording starts from the very end of what is already recorded.
I can of course open manually a new track but whatever I do, it does not seem possible to start recording from inside the track.

Is that a technical issue or rather due to some change in Audacity itself?
How can it be fixed?

Many thx,
Peter

R Record and Shift+R Start-a-new-track are reversed. By massive vote, people wanted default Record to take up where they left off, not start a whole new track.

You can just use them that way, or reverse them back to the old way in Audacity Preferences > Recording.

There is also Punch and Roll which is new. That’s something you could do on audiotape but not electronically.
