Audacity recognizing USB mic but not recording or registering sound

I’ve looked through every single forum article and made sure all the settings on the System Preferences (sound and devices) on my Mac were recognizing the mic and they are turned on in Audacity as well - but it isn’t monitoring or recording the sound. I made sure I plugged in the USB mic before opening Audacity. HELP! What could it be? I’ve tried it with a Scarlett Solo, Samson Q2U and Audio-Technica USB mic.

I’m using a Mac OS Catalina, version 10.15.3 using Audacity 2.3.3.

That’s the Catalina thing. The next Audacity version should be much better.

Meanwhile you might try a special Audacity install.
