Audacity problem with Guitar Rig 5, Windows 8.1

I’ve used Audacity for some time, and recorded many guitar parts using Guitar rig 5 plugin. Then i bought a new computer with windows 8.1 (earlier I had W7) and every time I try to apply plugin “Guitar Rig 5” to the track, Auduacity freezes and crashes.

  1. I’ve reinstalled with reseting preferences, nothing happened.
  2. Reinstaled Guitar Rig, nothing happend.
  3. I don’t know if it’s the system fault because it’s the firs time i use Audacity on Win 8.1
  4. Other plugins work correctly ( I have only one VSTi plugin, which doesn’t work)
  5. Tried to download and install free amp simulators, ended up with 5-6 programs providing spam and unwanted Opera bowser.

If there is anythng I could do, please tell me.

If “Guitar Rig 5” worked on a previous version of Audacity (2.0.6 ?) revert to that temporarily.
Audacity version 2.1.X introduced real-time preview of effects :¬),
but teething problems with real-time preview have rendered some VSTs unusable, which previously worked :¬(

Audacity does not support VSTi plugins.

Are you using Guitar Rig 5 Pro or the free Guitar Rig Player?

What version of Audacity are you using? See the pink panel at the top of the page.

Does the problem only happen if you apply the effect while playing audio, or does it happen even if you stop playing before applying the effect?

If you use the current 2.1 1 you can attach a debug report for us that should be written when Audacity crashes. Please see here for how to attach files: https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/how-to-attach-files-to-forum-posts/24026/1

Audacity does not support VSTi plugins

I don’t really know if it’s VSTi, what I know that i put the file guitarrig5.dll into the Audacity plugin folder.

Guitar Rig 5. I’d rather spent some $ than buy every single effect in existence (and amps).

What version of Audacity are you using?

Lastest, 2.1.1. I just downloaded the 2.0.6 version to check if it’s the version fault.

Does the problem only happen if you apply the effect while playing audio, or does it happen even if you stop playing before applying the effect?

What I do is: start recording (thorugh Rocksmith RealTone Cable) → play something → stop the recording, i got clean sound from my guitar. Then I go Effects → guitar rig and this is the problem.

Today I found off that when I delete three files in Audacity’s folder in Appdata: pluginregistry.cfg, pluginsettings.cfg and audacity.cfg i can install the plugin again- then it’s working. When i close the window, i cant and I got to delete the files again.

Quite probably only the plugin*.cfg files are relevant.

I have a Guitar Rig 5 demo from 2013. It does not crash in Audacity 2.1.1 for me on Windows 7, if I choose presets from its interface.

Are you using Presets from Audacity’s Manage button?

If you don’t change any settings in Guitar Rig, can you then use it in the next Audacity session?

Maybe you can share the error logs for us to better understand the problem.
