Audacity plays noise and crashes

Opening any type of media (mp3, wav, etc) makes a strange noise instead of files’ content. Moreover Audacity crashes shortly afterwards. Any suggestions for troubleshooting? Thanks.

What operating system and which version of Audacity?

I’m having the same problem. Audacity plays sound that sounds like TV static, and plays the file much faster than it should, playing a 3 minute file in 10 seconds, despite the time on the timeline being correct. I’m using Ubuntu 15.04 64 bit and audacity 2.0.6

The version of Audacity in the Ubuntu 15.04 is built with Wx3.0. The required version of Wx for Audacity is 2.8. Consequently there are many problems with the build of Audacity that Ubuntu currently ship.

Probably the best solution until Wx3 is supported by Audacity is to use the PPA from this page (which uses WxWidgets 2.8): http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/2015/04/install-audacity-audio-editor-2-1-0-in-ubuntu-from-ppa/

You will (probably) have the same problem in the Audacity 2.1.0 PPA though there are many problems that you will be free from by using that.

See here if the speed problem persists http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/Release_Notes_2.1.0#Miscellaneous_platform-specific_issues.

Indeed the problem persisted, however launching Audacity from command line as suggested seems to work fine.

Thank you!
