Audacity now "Not Responding" when I import WAV files.

I’m using 2.3.0. on Windows 10

So this week is my first real go around with Audacity, so I don’t have much experience. I’m trying to import 3 fairly large files for a podcast I am going to be producing for an internship. Their sizes range from 300 MB to 500 MB each.

Every time I upload said files, Audacity freezes up and gives me a Not Responding error. This happens without fail.

I have an Acer E15 with plenty of space, that isn’t being used for anything else.

Can anyone shed some light?

Thanks

Do small files import correctly?

Does this happen when importing to a previously saved project, or a new (empty) Audacity project?

In “Edit > Preferences > Directories”, where does it say the Audacity Temp folder is located?

How much free space is available in the Temp folder?

Thanks for the reply. It says 855.3 GB of free space

Perhaps it will help if I number them:

  1. Do small files import correctly?

  2. Does this happen when importing to a previously saved project, or a new (empty) Audacity project?

  3. In “Edit > Preferences > Directories”, where does it say the Audacity Temp folder is located?

  4. How much free space is available in the Temp folder?

  1. yes…
  2. yes… although I last saved it and copied all files.
    3)…local\audacity\SessionData
    4)855.2 GB

Their sizes range from 300 MB to 500 MB each.

How do you know they’re WAV files? Windows loves to hide identifying filename extensions and if they’re really highly compressed MP3 files (for example), Audacity will de-compress them to their original size, and further, Audacity works in a super high quality internal format, larger than common WAV.

If you’re trying to open multiple files like this, Audacity will produce a massive project and that’s where your failure is coming from.

As Steve above, do smaller files work?

One more. Audacity does UNDO by making a copy of the whole project. So now two massives. Then three.

If you have a spinning metal drive, you should be waiting for Audacity to finish housekeeping.

At what point does this go from “yes” to “no”?

Where did these 300 to 500 MB podcasts come from? (podcasts are almost always compressed formats such as MP3).
