Audacity not hearing my Mic

HI All,
I am trying to record spoken audio with updated Audacity 3.3.3 into my old Mac running Big Sur 11.7.9.

On System preferences the Mac is hearing the external Mic, and external Mic is selected in the software. Flatline. No level on the meters. I’ve checked it against the built-in, same problem.

Any help greatly appreciated.
