Audacity Nightly Builds

@Gale Andrews
Will the nightly builds ever again include support for Windows WDM-KS? It seems such support stopped with Audacity 2.1.0-alpha-Jan 2015.
Regards,
Robert

WDM-KS support was turned off for 2.1.0 because it caused freezes and crashes on a small proportion of machines when trialled in 2.0.4 release. That “small proportion” amounted to several hundred reported cases and no doubt many more unreported.

I agree we usually turn on WDM-KS support again after a release but we have not done so this time. Because only a small handful of users download nightly builds we don’t get much extra information about the crash and freeze problems from enabling WDM-KS in those builds. From our point of view it’s probably not worth the churn of turning that support off and on with each release.

The better solution would be to provide a way in release versions for users to turn WDM-KS on and off themselves, allied with better ways of letting the user send us debug information for the crashes/freezes.

However if you compile Audacity yourself the above shows you how to re-enable WDM-KS.

Agreed. WDM-KS should be offered as an option.
I am currently still using Audacity 2.1.0-alpha-Jan 2015 because of WDM-KS support. Unfortunately, I could never report any crashes or freezes. WDM-KS always worked beautifully on my system (Windows 8.1 64-bit, no sound card, only Realtek integrated audio).

However if you compile Audacity yourself the above shows you how to re-enable WDM-KS.

I might be audacious enough for such a bold move one of these days…

Thanks,
Robert
