Audacity music recordings from LPs are distorted, but on PC loudspeakers OK

Audacity 3.6.4
Pioneer turntable with RCA phono connectors and pre-amp connected via USB to PC
Realtek High Definition Audio input
Listening to LPs on the PC’s loudspeakers is OK, there’s no distortion, but when I try to record music, the resulting recording is extremely distorted. It seemed to me that the input level was too high, so I reduced the recording/ input level to 10% then 5%, but it doesn’t help. The 5% level is reflected in the Realtek HD Audio Manager. If you can help, I would very much appreciate it!

Check your Recording Device and make sure you’ve selected the USB device.

That’s (probably) your regular soundcard. You want the USB preamp.

If you select “loopback” you can create an internal feedback loop.
