Audacity lost Devices information

Hello Lovely People,
I run Audacity happily on my Mac OS X however today it will open up but not record. The following message is displayed ‘Error while opening sound device. Please check the recording device settings and the project sample rate’.
I have downloaded the current version but have the same problem. On opening the Preferences:Devices window there is no information on the interface - host is blank, Device is blank and so is Recording neither does it allow me to select anything or type in the information required.
I have audacity on another mac and that works fine.

I would really appreciate any help/advice please.
Many thanks,
Heather

What kind of Mac do you have and what device are you expecting to be there?

If you have a USB microphone and it becomes unplugged even for a moment, it will vanish from Audacity until you either restart Audacity or Transport > Rescan.

Close Audacity. Apple (upper left) > System Preferences > Sound > Input. Do you see your device there? If the computer can’t see it, Audacity will not be able to see it.

Thank you Kozlkowski - it was a problem with the system preferences on my Mac. They are now cleared and Audacity is working again - hurrah!
