Audacity has no audio output [SOLVED]

Hi,
I was using Audacity 2.0.5 with USB headphones to edit some files when the audio output ceased. I tried changing to the built-in speakers, no joy there. Neither did rebooting help. I then uninstalled Audacity and installed 2.1.2 using Ubuntu Software Center. This didn’t help either. Thinking that the audio file might be corrupt, I recorded some voice and then played it back thru Audacity. Again, no audio output.

I’m running Audacity on Ubuntu 14.04 with the Gnome 3 desktop. The Gnome MPlayer works as does Internet audio, so the problem seems to be confined to Audacity.

At this point I’m pretty near the boundaries of my knowledge. Any pointers as to what might be the problem would be very much appreciated

SOLVED
Inadvertently, I had changed the playback device dropdown value from pulse to hdmi. When corrected, audio returned
