Audacity Freezing on Playback

Hi,

I’ve been using Audacity for a few years for recording audiobooks. I usually use Windows for editing just because it’s my more powerful machine. I have a fanless linux box for recording (I’ve never tried playback other than for a few seconds and never used it for editing).

I’m currently attempting to use my linux laptop for editing files while I visit a friend. It has been freezing.

Here are my details:

Arch Linux
Audacity 2.3.1 (distro version)
4.20.7-arch1-1-ARCH

I have 123G free on the drive where Audacity writes the temp files.

I ran strace and edited until it froze. I am hitting play/stop using the spacebar, z and delete to remove chunks of audio, and ctrl-s to save reasonable frequently just because of the freezing issues.

Here is the tail end of my strace (if you need more, just let me know):
poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN|POLLOUT}], 1, -1) = 1 ([{fd=3, revents=POLLOUT}])
writev(3, [{iov_base=“5\30\4\0l\34\0\3\21\1\0\38\3\327\2\213\4\6\0m\34\0\3l\34\0\3*\0\0\0”…, iov_len=1692}, {iov_base=NULL, iov_len=0}, {iov_base=“”, iov_len=0}], 3) = 1692
recvmsg(3, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)
recvmsg(3, {msg_namelen=0}, 0) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable)
futex(0x7f0aa957f9d0, FUTEX_WAIT, 3034, NULL) = 0
futex(0x55cb90a599d0, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 2, NULL

I get those Resource temporarily unavailable when it is running just fine, so I figure those don’t really matter.

Any other helpful info I can dig up?

I’ve also tried the long term stable kernel and gotten the same results.

Any ideas?

It would be so nice to be able to edit outside of the house!

Just a bit more info. So I’ve tried using audacity-git from the AUR, as well as the release that is on the regular Arch stuff. I’ve gone from the LTS kernel to the standard one. All of them freeze. So, out of frustration, I installed Audacity using wine…and it’s working using wine. It’s actually more responsive and hasn’t frozen in 45 mins of editing when it was freezing in under 5 mins running natively.

Does that help narrow anything down?

For now, I can certain use wine, but it just seems odd that it is more stable there than in my native environment.

Is the default sound system “Pulse Audio”?

Please post your “Audio Device Info” (from the “Help” menu).

I don’t use Pulse Audio, only ALSA. I don’t have Pulse installed on my system.

In the device toolbar, try setting the recording device to:
HDA Intel PCH: ALC3239 Analog (hw:0,0)

and the playback device to:
dmix

Unfortunately, it still froze after a few minutes of editing when I hit the spacebar to play a section.

Try launching Audacity from a terminal window (type the word: audacity), and see if it gives any clues when it freezes (note that it is normal to see a load of “warnings” when Audacity launches, which are due to Audacity scanning the sound system to see what devices are available).

Here’s the last bit of the terminal warnings. That toplevel window one is one I see all the time with it even when it is working fine for minutes before it freezes.

Interestingly, I have only ever heard of ONE other occurrence of this error in Audacity.

I’m far from convinced that this is the cause of the problem, but if you do have any blop plug-ins installed, uninstalling them would be an easy way to eliminate this possibility.

As far as I know I don’t have any extra plugins installed other than Acx-check. I don’t have the blop package installed.

I glanced through my plugins list and didn’t see anything that really stood out. I can also get that error and it not freeze. That’s what is killing me. There’s nothing consistent except that it happens when I hit space to play, but I could have hit space to play 20 times before that. It’s so odd.

I also just tried renaming my .audacity-data directory and going with the defaults and it it still acted up.

Look in “Help menu > About Audacity → Build Information”.
Near the bottom, it should say if you have a “Release build” or “Debug build”. Which is it?

Also, on the same screen, but higher up in the “Core libraries” section; which version of wxWidgets, and which version of PortAudio?

I’ve also tried the version that is default with Arch. This is one I get from the AUR (audacity-git).

According to the build.txt file in the source code (https://github.com/audacity/audacity/blob/master/linux/build.txt), Audacity 2.3.1 should be built with wxWidgets 3.1.1

I doubt that it is the cause of the problems that you are seeing, but your version of Audacity has been built against an older version of wxWidgets. However, if they have built against the wrong version of wxWidgets, I wonder if they have built against the wrong version of other libraries as well.

Just wondering, why not?

I don’t use Pulse because when I tried it (albeit, years ago) it had a bit too much overhead and I’m quite used to ALSA at this point. I’m kinda stuck in my curmudgeonly old linux ways. I tend to run linux on systems that are a little less than powerful  so every little bit of memory and processing power I can save is usually quite noticeable. I don’t think it would be horrible on this laptop, but ALSA is a lot more familiar to me.

Let me go back to the Arch repo version and try that one again. It freezes the same way, but I didn’t notice what libraries it was built with. I’ll update later tonight after I get some work done and have time to swap out Audacities

So, here’s the info from the one from the official repository. It does the same freezing thing as the git one I tried earlier. At this point I’m just crazy curious about what it is, since it works perfectly in wine, so I’ve been editing that way.

The symptoms that you describe, match exactly with an old bug that has been logged on the bug tracker for about 8 years (still open), except that in 8 years, the problem has only been seen when using PulseAudio. The recommended workaround for the bug is to select the “hw” options in the device toolbar so as to access the ALSA devices directly and bypass PulseAudio.

So I think you can see why I’m confused by your case.

It’s because Audacity connects to the sound system on demand (on play or record), and disconnects when stopped. This was an old design decision dating back over a decade, before Linux had a sound system that supported multiple client applications (a service that is typically provided by PulseAudio in modern Linux distributions).

The problem occurs when Audacity tries to connect the sound device, and the device is not there any more. This can happen easily with PulseAudio, because if PulseAudio experiences any problems, it kills and respawns itself. Unfortunately, if respawning occurs before Audacity has connected, then PulseAudio does not restore Audacity’s connection (because Audacity was not connected at the time), and Audacity can no longer connect because it is now a new instance of Pulse, and Audacity is waiting to connect to the old (now dead) instance.

The reason that the problem does not occur in WINE (or with Jack Audio System), is that WINE connects once to the sound device on launch, and maintains a constant connection until WINE is close. Audacity is then connecting to the same sound system (provided by WINE), each time a connection is required. Similarly with Jack audio system; in Jack, the audio I/O stream runs constantly.

I don’t know how to reproduce this problem when using ALSA, because the device should always be present, even if it is not “available”. If the device is present but not available, Audacity will time-out and show an error: “Error while opening sound device…”

Have you made any modifications / optimisations to the ALSA system, such as reducing the latency?

Okay, that makes a lot of sense. I haven’t touched Alsa on this laptop other than to install the packages, so unless Arch has tweaks…

I also have alsa-oss installed to get pianobar (pandora commandline player) working right.

I think the only audio file I’ve tweaked was /etc/libao.conf (if my pianobar sounds like crap, I change the alsa to oss):
default_driver=alsa
dev=default
quiet

I’m using Audacity in Manjaro’s “community” repo, and come across this problem too. The version I’m using is 2.3.1 (or in pacman’s naming style, 1:2.3.1-1).

If if can be helpful, my log in running audacity is:
