AUDACITY FREEZES on launch Windows 7

When I launch Audacity, I get the Audacity Logo, and a graphic of a gray speaker/volume beneath it, and then my laptop FREEZES completely, no mouse, no nothing. I have to turn off the power. Two weeks ago, for no reason, when I tried to launch it just on a whim, Audacity LOADED! I was able to use it. Now it’s back to completely freezing my computer if I try and launch the Audacity program. This is the only program I’m having trouble with.

I have a Dell Studio 1458 Laptop running Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1 . it’s a 64 bit Operating SystemI installed Audacity 2.0.5 on 10/18/13

I looked for similar issues on your forum but haven’t found any. Can someone help? :frowning:
Thanks in advance,
Jennifer

The most likely causes are:

  • Problematic audio devices
  • VST plug-ins on your system
  • A misconfigured security program that observes what programs do on the computer.

Audio devices are most likely to be the cause (for example, your built-in sound device or an external audio interface has bad drivers, or Audacity is incompatible with some virtual audio driver installed by a program that records audio or video).

If you want to find out more about what caused the freeze, look at the memory dump. This FAQ gives you some help with this: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/faq_errors.html#reboot .

I suggest you disconnect all external audio devices then reinstall Audacity from http://audacityteam.org/download/windows making sure that you check (tick) the box “Reset Preferences” half way through the installation process.

When you launch Audacity and it asks you if you want to “Reset Preferences”, click “Yes”.

You will then see a dialogue “Install VST Effects”. Uncheck all the boxes and click OK, or simply press “Cancel”.

Then see if Audacity launches. If it does, and you want VST effects, go to Edit > Preferences…, choose “Effects”, then enable the box for rescanning VST effects, OK and restart Audacity.
