AUDACITY FLATLINING - HELP!

Hi everyone,

I’m using version 8.1 of Windows, Audacity version 2.0.6 (I had version 2.0.5 until very recently, but updating to version 2.0.6 didn’t solve my problem) and I obtained the .exe installer.

I run pub quizzes, and as part of my pub quiz I do a music round. To get the songs for the music round, I find them on YouTube, then copy and paste the URL into a website called http://www.youtube-mp3.org/ to convert the song into an MP3 file, which I then download and open in Audacity. Once it’s been downloaded to Audacity, I use Audacity to trim the audio into a 30-second music clip, which I then export to my hard drive so I can transfer it to Windows Media Player. Once I’ve done this with all the songs, I burn all the clips onto a CD using Windows Media Player.
HOWEVER…last week when I tried to do this, I had a problem. When I opened the MP3 file in Audacity, there were two flat lines stretching from one side of the recording screen to the other, each line starting at where it says ‘0.0’, instead of the two usual two sound waves. When I pressed the ‘play’ button, there was no sound. When I exported the file to play it, there was also no sound. I have no idea why this has suddenly happened - it doesn’t make any sense. It was working fine before. Any help or advice on how to fix this problem would be very greatly appreciated - thanks!

So that step failed. Instead of opening the MP3 download in Audacity, try opening it in Windows Media.

Does a known good song still import into Audacity OK?
