Audacity, first steps

Hello, these are my first steps with Audacity. I have very basic questions for the moment : 1/ What is the difference between ‘import‘ a file and ‘open’ a file ; 2/ why, if I use ‘open’, can’t I see clearly the different opened files ; 3/ if I use ‘import”, how can I, when I play the audio file, avoid listening to all tracks simultaneously, although I thought I had selected only the 1st one ? Sorry to be dumb, the answers are probably evident for everybody, but I couldn’t find them so far. Thanks !

If a file cannot be opened for whatever reason, you can try importing it instead. Both actions have, at the end, the same effect: you can edit the file or export it.

Please clarify. I do not understand the problem.

If you import one single file, you can listen to that single file. I never tried to import several files at the same time.

But keep in mind that Audacity is an editor, not the preferred means to listen to a music file. Every time you open / import a file, it is converted to an “Audacity Project” file (.aup3). The “Save” command then saves this .aup3 file which can only be used by Audacity and is not a music file. You need to export it, if you made any changes.

Please tell us more precisely, what you want to do with Audacity.

If you try to open more than one file, another instance of Audacity will open in a new Window. The two (or more) files can’t be used together in the same project.

Normally, I’m only working on one file at a time and usually open (habit?). If I’m mixing or otherwise working on more than one file, then the only choice is to import the subsequent files.

Thanks for replies. DVDdoug has pointed the most important thing (which I finally also had found on my side : “another instance of Audacity”.

Actually, I tried Audacity because of the lacks in Suno, especially about having several different voices in the same song. It is very frustrating to get a good musical track, but to conclude that, as to the voices, Suno does exactly what HE (or SHE) wants, without paying any attention to what YOU would like. You can find tutorials on YouTube for ex, explaining what you should do : it doens’t work, or only purely at random. So I was told : but you can correct all that in Audacity. I tried, but it seems very, very complicated and with no correct result, although I admit that simple things (like cutting a piece of music that is too long, even fading it out, works fine). Anyway, I guess I have to wait for new releases of suno, taking into account different voices. I’m sure it will come one day. Thanks for everything.
