Audacity complains about orphaned files

Hello:

I recorded and saved a recording session under a filename beginning with 007 (should have been 008 with my system), and after exiting Audacity, I renamed the AUP file and directory of the same name so that it began with 008. As a result I had a ton of orphaned files when I tried to open it again for post-editing. I exited again without saving and renamed them back to begin with 007 and the errors persist. Below is an output from an error log while it was renamed to begin with “007”.

Attached is the AUP file that was renamed to 008* then back again to 007*.

On the information presented, the orphan detection is correct. The files shown in the log (and so presumably in the _data folder) and not listed in the AUP file.

The only safe way to rename a project is File > Save Project As and choose the new name. Don’t change project files or folders in file manager programs.

If you do manual renames of the AUP file and _data folder, you also have to change “projname” in the AUP file to the new name of the _data folder.

The AUP file you posted is opening “007-WWRouse_Ball_-A_Short_Account_of_the_History_of_Mathematics-_Chapter_4_III_data”.

From your description, you wish it to open “008-WWRouse_Ball_-A_Short_Account_of_the_History_of_Mathematics-_Chapter_4_III_data”.

So if you are opening the 007 _data folder when you want to open the _008, this explains the orphans, but not why there are no missing block files. Is the project silence, or what happens?

Also note that you cannot store more than 13.5 hours of audio (at 44100 Hz) as an Audacity project. At higher sample rates you can store more audio, and at lower rates you can store less audio. Projects with too much audio (defined as above) will reopen with orphaned files (even when pointing to the correct _data folder) and are unrecoverable (short of trying the Audacity 1.2 recovery utility as described on feedback@). The latter does not exist, since it was renamed to 007. The former directory does exist, and is the renamed directory. By your assessment, the AUP file is opening the correct directory, as I had renamed it. By rights, it ought to

The recording is about 40 minutes long, so length is not an issue.

Opening the AUP file now does indeed result in a short, silent audio rendering, in answer to one of your questions.

I agree though that there seems to be little correspondence between the AUP file and the log, however, when I do a directory tree search of the filenames from the AUP, nothing seems missing, as far as I can tell. The e00* filenames in the log all seem to exist on the hard drive as au files also. Oddly, I haven’t found any files in common between the log and the AUP, in support of what you said. Not to say that there aren’t, but in the 5 or 6 files I’ve tried, there doesn’t appear to be any matching filenames.

I tried a random file from somewhere in the middle of the AUP. While it wasn’t in the log, it was found as a physical file on disk. Same for the reverse. Files in somewhere in the bowels of the log file weren’t in the AUP, but were on disk.

It appears that the log found about 120 files and there are over 545 .AU files on disk in total. Thus, the AUP is pointing at something listed in itself, but not everything.

Perhaps you want to open the content that was at one time in 008?

All I can see is the AUP file you submitted, which points to the 007 folder.

I cannot comment on that. I asked you for a listing of the files in the _data folder you are trying to open and told you how to do that.

You could post images of the 007 subfolders, but it would get very messy.

If the AU files listed in the AUP were in the correct e00/d00 and e00/d01 subfolders in the 007 _data folder, then there should be no reason Audacity can’t open them.

The files mentioned in the log appear to be in the 007 _data folder, and these are not apparently the content that should be in that data folder.

And what was that location on disk?

If you want that AU file in the project it needs to be in the 007 _data folder the AUP is pointing to. The same goes for all the other AU files listed in the AUP.

If you can locate some of the files listed in the AUP, you may be able to find all of them. You appear to have a single mono track in that project. In that case (if you had never run effects or cuts and pastes on that audio, and if you cannot get those files back into the 007 _data folder), you have an excellent chance of recovering the AU files to recovery WAV files.

All you need to do is sort the AU files into timestamp order, then rename them into a sequence while sorted thus, so they are suitable for the 1.2 Audacity Recovery Utility. You can use xplorer2 to perform the rename. The instructions are in the link I gave you in my first e-mail response:

The short answer to your most persistent question is that the location of all of the AU files I had mentioned were in the _data folder of the 007 directory. There is no 008 directory at this time or at the time I reported the error.

The command I used to find the files under my Windows XP installation was through a Cygwin shell, where I cd’ed into the directory with the AUP file, and did an “ls -lR” command of the 007 _data directory underneath, piping it through “less” so I could do a quick search of each filename.

I will address your other concerns another time, as it is getting late. Good night.

If you are still suggesting that the correct AU files (listed in the AUP file) are correctly sited in the _data folder that projname in the AUP file points to, yet Audacity doesn’t display the data correctly (and yet doesn’t report the files as missing either), please upload the entire project (AUP file and _data folder inside a ZIP file) to a server from where we can download it (see my original e-mail). Then we can look at what is going on instead of speculating about something we still cannot see.

Meantime I believe my original e-mail and my latest reply here gives you ample scope to recover the project using the 1.2 Recovery Utility.
