Audacity .cfg file cannot be accessed

every time I attempt to open Audacity it redirects me to the Audacity Configuration Error message and i cannot open the app no matter how many times I click the “Retry” button and when I click the “Quit Audacity” button it redirects me to Problem Report for Audacity (I am unable to submit the report) I have already tried to uninstall and reinstall the app but it did not work and I do not have any antivirus software installed that could cause it. i even deleted audacity.cfg but that also did not work. I am using the current version of audacity and this just randomly happened one day without any apparent cause so the disk should not be full. read-only is unchecked already on audacity.cfg. I had already restarted the app and my PC but still nothing assistance would be appreciated

I would try the following:

Close / shut down Audacity if it is open.

Go to the “Roaming” directory mentioned in the dialog and move the whole “audacity” directory to some other place - maybe your desktop or elsewhere.

Start Audacity. When the directory you moved away is not there, Audacity creates a new one (or tries to create one), just as if Audacity was installed new.

If the creation of the directory does not succeed, there is something wrong with your file permissions. But this is then a problem of Windows, and not of Audacity (sorry to say this!).

BTW:

  • “uninstalling” Audacity usually does not delete the “audacity” folder in “Roaming”, so it doesn’t cure the problem.
  • messing around manually with “read-only” flags etc. can cause many problems.
