Audacity Cannot Locate Audio Devices

Thanks in advance for the help. I have installed/uninstalled/reinstalled Audacity at least a dozen times because I keep getting an error message at login that says it cannot find any audio devices. I have recorded voiceovers previously on my SurfacePro with Windows 10 without a real problem. I am trying this on my Dell XP27 now, also with Windows 10 but it just does not want to work. I also get the error message “Error while opening sound device. Please check the recording device settings and the project sample rate”, and I have seen quite a few posts that show that problem but none of the solutions are working for me.

I did try reworking the audacity.cfg file based on a previous posting, I noticed that on my SurfacePro that file listed the audio devices I am using (Realtek, Yeti, MME) but the cfg file on my Dell does not. When I tried to add these audio devices there was no change. Also, the drop down boxes on the main screen are completely blank - they show no devices at all!

Finally, the audio on the Dell works perfectly in all other circumstances. In fact I can play the previously Audacity-recorded mp3 and wav files with a different program, I just can’t record new or amend existing files. Any suggestions out there???
