Audacity altering project file without permission

Unsure if this is a bug or just some lack of knowledge on my part-

So I just got finished with an unsuccessful edit session of an aup3 file and upon closing the file (I did not want to save as the changes were not what I was looking for) the program opened up a few boxes doing some sort of compact operation. I closed these boxes, which I assume is what caused the later issue.

When I tried to reopen the aup3 file to attempt editing it again, I got the dreaded “failed to read” error. I have no backups of the file, and there are no previous versions I can restore to.

What happened? Why is Audacity altering my project file without me saving it? I specifically wanted to close the program without any changes being made, and now my file is corrupt. This is very frustrating.

Unfortunately, yes. Things like the undo history are written into the project file, and then removed when you close the file. That’s what the compaction dialog is about. You may be able to recover the project if you use GitHub - audacity/audacity-project-tools with the -drop_autosave option.

Thanks for the response. I’ve tried using the github in the past, but couldn’t locate the exe files required to actually make the restoration function. I’m not sure if this is an issue with my computer, the download, or just not knowing enough about the directory.

you can download the program here: Release 1.0.4 · audacity/audacity-project-tools · GitHub

Recovered it, thanks!
