Audacity 4.0. Keeps crashing. Losing my work. Files won't open. HELP!

I downloaded Audacity 4.0. It’s my first experience with Audacity and it has so far been awful.

I am recording an audiobook, and have been battling with the app repeatedly crashing at random moments, resulting in 1. unsaved work that I have to redo, and 2. project files that do not open. It seems they are corrupted?

I am on a time-bound project, and this has set me back at least 5 hours.

Has anybody got solutions on how to make it stop crashing?

In terms of my recording process, it is:

  1. New project per chapter
  2. One track (mono - using my Zoom H6, Rode NT1 on my Macbook)
  3. Save to the Cloud (crashing did infact stop when I started saving to my computer, but I only found out this tip too late).
  4. When I click ‘save’, the app crashes. Sometimes reverting back to a previous version (and me losing 10 minutes of work), OR sometimes becoming completely unusable, as I can’t get into the file (from my desktop, the online platform or the app itself).

My biggest need right now is to be able to access the files that will not open.

Somebody help - going crazy!

Go back to 3.7.9.

Will I be able to open my files (if saved as .aup4)? The ones that are corrupted won’t open at all.

No. Export your work as WAV or AIF and import into 3.7.9. The corrupted files are toast, as far as I know.

Stick with 3.7.9. If you are so inclined, check in on Audacity 4 now and then to see if and when it meets your needs.

Pants. I was saving up onto the cloud. Those files are most likely gone in that case. Thanks for the tips! Hopefully they sort the bugs asap.

Can you copy your files off the cloud and onto a local drive? That might help.
