Hello All
I’ve just joined the forums and this is my first post, so please be gentle!!
I’ve used many versions Audacity over the years both on Windows and Linux, mostly for editing single WAV files, and have found it to be a versatile and useful audio editor. More recently I’ve started using it to edit multi-track WAV recordings and I’ve hit a bit of an issue with Audacity V3.x that gives random gaps and pauses during the multi-track playback. Stopping and restarting the playback results in the gaps being in different places, so it’s not down to corruption in the files themselves. This happens both with pre-save projects (.aup) and also WAV files that are directly imported into an empty project.
The basic details of my PC are as follows: Intel Core i7 12700K with 32GB RAM on an Aorus Z690 Mobo with nVidia 3060Ti graphics, running the latest version of Windows 11, with WASAPI as the Audio Host. I do a lot of “loopback” recordings as one particular friend insists on sending me recording of his group as WhatsApp voice messages (the quality is surprisingly good!) so I need to use WASAPI as the audio host. I have tried using both the on-board Realtek audio and a USB Soundblaster Pro Studio, but both exhibit the same issue.
I’ve tried the usual things including making sure everything is up to date including Audicity (currently 3.6.4) and that there are no other things going on such as background file transfers, Windows updates etc., and muting all other audio-related things such as system sounds etc, but to no avail.
To try and narrow things down I installed Windows 10 LTSC on the same PC in a dual-boot configuration with base software, fully updated with the latest drivers etc, and installed the latest version of Audacity. Annoyingly the results were the same with intermittent gaps so I decided to work backwards through Audacity versions to see at which point the glitching started. After a fair bit of faffing about I found that V2.4.2 plays cleanly with imported WAV files but I also found that in some cases, older versions of Audacity won’t import .aup files created in later versions, which means I can’t really use this as a solution!!
Ideally I’d like to get this sorted on the Windows 11 side as I don’t want to have to transfer the applications I use (RipX DAW, SteinBerg Spectralayers etc) over to the Windows 10 side just to work with the audio…
Any help would be appreciated!!
EDIT: I’ve attached an example screengrab showing the issue…
