Audacity 3.6.1, left running, data loss : discards current track

I like to turn on Audacity recording at the start of rehearsal and just leave it running so whatever takes place I can go back and review / learn.
Sometimes I forget to turn it off at the end of rehearsal. So it sits there recording an empty room for some hours.
.
This has happened in the past. At some point Audacity would stop the recording, perhaps raise an error message, but not lose any data.
.
Now what happens is I come back to the rehearsal room and there is no recording at all. Audacity is sitting there with a blank screen and no tracks present. The recording that I saw during rehearsal is completely gone.
.
Minor attempts at diagnosing:

  • made sure I have free disk space. 100+ GB
  • tried saving the project (before I even start recording) so it would not be just “unnamed project”. Did not help.

I see that there is now a 3.6.4. I’m going to run one more test on 3.6.1 to see if it fails repeatably, then I’ll upgrade and test 3.64 to see if the problem still exists.

Experimental result: left it recording 24h, it did fine, it just recorded the empty room (plus a couple of my practice sessions) and did nothing wrong.

So… I classify this as “monitor for recurrence” unless somebody knows a way to investigate the prior incidents.
