Audacity 2.3.0 suddenly crashing on open

This is odd. One day it was working, the next it wasn’t…

I’ve not installed anything new or updated my Mac. I’m running El Cap 10.11.1 - this is the error that I’m getting:

Has anyone encountered this?

When was your operating system last updated? 10.11.1 is obsolete.

There are reasons that I’ve not updated the OS - compatibility with existing hardware and software. But that’s not relevant to the issue.

i did test an older version of Audacity too and got the same result.

Which did you try? Have you tried Audacity version 2.0.6? It is available here: Audacity - Browse Files at SourceForge.net

Hi Steve,

Thanks for that. I’d tried version 2.2.1, but the version you linked to works.

I have a suspicion that I’ve got some dodgy plugins floating around that I need to clear out!

It’s always a good idea to remove dodgy plug-ins, though the problem here was simply that your operating system is too out of date for recent versions of Audacity.

Nope, that’s not the case. That version of Audacity was working fine one day, then stopped the next. Nothing had changed on the Mac, no updates or anything. Version 2.3.0 is - according to the official site - for OSX 10.7 onwards.

Yes it is, but that assumes that 10.7 has the updates that Apple provide for it. Until very recently Audacity supported Windows XP, but that assumed that XP had all of the service packs.

So what are you suggesting? That Audacity 2.3.0 magically changed overnight? I don’t understand your point, but so long as you are now up and running I’m happy

The reason that I suggested Audacity 2.0.6 was because I searched for similar cases to the problem that you described. I found some, and like you they were all using very old versions of mac OS, but they could still run Audacity 2.0.6. I found no cases like this on updated machines. Feel free to draw your own conclusions.

This was the point of my post.

Nothing had changed - it just stopped working. That’s why I posted the errors - I wondered if anyone else had seen something similar.

The crux of it seems to be these lines:

Dyld Error Message:
Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libcrypto.35.dylib
Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework/Versions/A/MobileDevice
Reason: image not found

But I don’t know whether the dylib in question is part of Audacity or part of a corrupted plugin.
