I record my sermons in church with Audacity. I also download YouTube videos and convert them to MP3s. However, when I go to trim the project and export it, the resulting MP3 sounds like it was recorded in a tin can.
What can I do with this? I’ve had this issue with Audacity 2.0.4+.
If this only happens after converting to MP3, try a higher bitrate or a higher quality setting.
MP3 is lossy compression. With higher bitrates, there is less compression, the files are bigger, and the quality is (generally) better.
Note that with VBR (variable bitrate) VBR 0 is the best, and VBR 9 is the worst.
YouTube audio & video is already compressed with lossy compression. If you re-compress it, there is additional (theoretical) quality loss, although it may not always be noticeable. (Audacity like all “normal” audio editors, has to de-compress the file before editing.)

Maybe too much information.
Both the YouTube selections and your live performance sound like that?
Do you ever plug headphones into the computer during live recording and listen to the quality? Yes, I understand it will be a little late, but it should sound exactly like your show.
