Reboot your computer, then try re-installing and in the “Select Additional Tasks” screen, put a check in the “Reset Preferences” box. Complete the installation. On launching Audacity, a dialog should appear asking you to confirm if you want to reset preferences - select Yes to reset preferences.
Does that work?
If not, are there any error messages?
Please describe in detail what happens.

I reinstalled Audacity Audacity 2.0.4.
When I launch Audacity, the CPU remains at 50%.

Did you select “Reset Preferences”? That is important or reinstalling will make no difference at all (it may not make a difference if you reset preferences, but it is worth trying).

I did select ‘Reset Preferences’ .
Regardless, when launched, the program does not have a window.
Should I try an earlier version?

Audacity 2.0.3 is available here: Google Code Archive - Long-term storage for Google Code Project Hosting.
You should view using 2.0.3 as a temporary measure. It seems to affect only a few XP machines, which makes it difficult to track down the problem because we have not been able to reproduce the issue. When a solution is found I hope that you will be able to test it, which will then give you the benefit of the many improvements that have been made in Audacity 2.0.4.

Please try the build in this topic https://forum.audacityteam.org/t/audacity-start-failure-or-blue-screen-on-a-few-machines/30903/1 .

Audacity 2.0.5-alpha-Sep 8 2013 is completely operable.
Thank you!

Thank you for that new build - I was having a problem in XP where trying to run audacity just made my machine reboot. Now, with this build, it is sorted - thank you
