Assigning keys to sounds/audios

Hello everyone, I am new here and am also a newbie concerning audacity. We used to use audacity in our amateur theatre group as an audio management tool. This was about 10 to 15 years ago. I am just returning to the program now and was wondering the following:
It used to be possible to assign certain sounds to any given key on the keyboard. Is this still possible? Background info is that I am a teacher and would like to have a “mixing console” on which I have several sounds/audios at the ready for class and can assign them specific keys, say a gong sound on the “g” key. I didn’t find any info online or in the forum. Thanks in advance and have a nice day!

I don’t think Audacity will help you with that. It’s an audio file editor, and it’s not intended as an everyday audio player or for “live” use, etc.

The magic phrase is “sound board”.
They are available as hardware or software.
