appears to be recording but no sound

Hello, I’m trying to record a cassette from a Wikoo cassette player. I have installed the Wikoo driver and Audacity appears to be recording per the wavy blue line but there is no sound while recording or on playback. I have software playthrough on and here are my tool bar settings

I have installed the Wikoo driver

I’d be surprised if you need a driver. Virtually all of these things (and USB turntables) are plug-and-play with the Microsoft supplied drivers.

But you’re not hearing anything, right?

Have you tried headphones plugged into the cassette player, or does it have a built-in speaker so you can check if it’s working at all? Maybe the tape is blank?

Hello, thanks for your response. The tape is definitely not blank and plays in an old fashioned cassette player. Everything I have read says the driver needs to be installed or the device won’t be recognized ( I don’t think it would hurt anything). I did not try the headphones but from what I read the sound should be playing through the computer sound card and headphones should not be necessary (there would still be the issue of no sound during playback).

With Software Playthrough, yes you should be hearing it through the computer speakers. Are you hearing it?

There is also a Windows option to Listen To This Device. You don’t need Audacity (or any other application) running for that.

You don’t have a “flat line” and it looks like you have analog noise. Can you hear that noise? Does it change when you pause the tape?

That noise-only with no signal makes me think the cassette player is defective.

If you have a desktop/tower computer with a “regular soundcard” you can connect line-out or headphone-out from the tape player into line-in on the soundcard.

Most laptops only have microphone-in and headphone-out, so you’d need a USB audio interface with line-inputs to record from regular cassette player.

I did not try the headphones

If there is no sound from the headphone jack we know the thing is totally defective. If the headphone jack works that doesn’t tell us as much… The USB port could still be defective.

T’he Wikoo has died - didn’t get to test the headphones but it probably was defective. I switched to a desktop pc with an old casette player and it worked perfectly. Thanks for your help!
