Amplitude recording cut off at .5

running vs 3.4.2 and recordings (stereo) cut off at amplitude .5. I have Audacity level set at 100% What am I missing?

That can happen if you record in mono with a stereo interface but using only one of the inputs.

The left & right signals cut in half so they don’t go over 0dB when mixed together.

If you record in stereo you can get to 0dB (100%) but you’ll have one silent channel and you have to deal with that.

Thanks Doug. I’m recording an online station but the “recording dev” is the speakers in loopback mode in Windows 10. I’m sort of new at the audio stuff on computers but dealt with large electronic systems antennas so familiar with the terms. So not sure where I’d set the mono seting as nothing is coming into the microphone plug connection. When I’d used Cooledit on Windows 7, I didn’t have any problem. But old vs of Cooledit doesn’t record under Windows 10 or 11. It still runs but can’t record in loopback mode like I used to unless I pay $$$ for the new version of Cooledit.
Thanks
Ron

While we’re on the subject of “loopback”, when I’m trying to record using Cooledit, I get the error msg, “A device ID used is out of range of system”, assuming this is in regards to the loopback connection in the system, as I have no input device to record sound. Was thinking of connecting the output from speakers into the mic input plug, but don’t know what impedance levels to use for that to make it even work. Any ideas?? If I connect the output channel plug into the mic plug on the back of the PC, it works on Cooledit (no error msg) but signal level is zippo!

Doug, found using the front output and mic connections on the PC and turning down the output volume, I could patch the output into the mic turning down the volume and I could still record using Cooledit, I just couldn’t hear it while recording unless I get a Y splitter, 1/2 going to the mic and 1/2 to the speakers. Does that sound right???
