Amplifying

What does ‘Allow Clipping’ mean? Is it useful?

Thanks,
Josh

If you amplify too much, you cross the limit. The tops of the peaks will be clipped. This will cause distortion. If you don’t allow clipping, you can increase the amplifying level only to that extent, where the peaks just so and so touch the limit. Say that you have 16 bit sound and the sample values somewhere between -25000 and 25000. When amplifying with no clipping to the maximum, you’ll have sample values between -32768 and 32767. If you amplify beyond these values (allowing clipping), any sample value beyond will be set to these values, because the 16 bit can’t hold any bigger values.
