Amplify Effect Problems

Hello

I am new here. I opted to upgrade to 3.1.3 version of Audacity. In the old version I was fine using effect/amplify/repeat amplify.

Now amplify only works occasionally and I have to keep shutting Audacity down and reopening to change the amplification. Repeat amplify hardly works at all.

Am wondering whether I need to uninstall Audacity and try a reinstall or has the new upgrade changed this feature and I need to learn how to work some new feature.

I am not a professional sound person.

Unless you change a setting, Amplify does only work once. The default is to make some blue waves in the performance reach maximum or 100%. If you have some waves in the performance already at 100% (your microphone was too loud), or you apply Amplify twice, it shouldn’t do anything.

What’s the goal? What’s the job?

Hello Koz

Thank you for your reply.

The job is to make speech with sound effects (as WAV file) to go in a video.

When I record the speech, my voice sounds quiet so I amplify it. When I do that there is hissing noise between the words and I de-amplify that hissing using a negative number in the amplify. So I make the words louder and the hiss between the words quieter.

Sometimes I make my own sound effects using similar techniques.

I am sorry to say that I don’t know what blue waves are.

Do you know what setting I change to allow Amplify to work more than once?

A noise gate will do that in one fell swoop.

If you want to repeat an effect in Audacity “Ctrl”+“R” …

Hello Trebor

Thank you for giving me a steer on that - that is a great help! As an amateur I don’t know the technical language and don’t know what to look for.

Thanks again.
