I want to generate some Tones,say,7 seconds long followed by a pause or silence.I’m new to all of this but have tried several methods with the program but can’t get it correct. Do I need to make separate files for the Tone and Pause/Silence ? And if so,how do I align them ? I want to create a long sequence of tones
and pauses. Please help.
I’m using 2.0.4 /exe file,on Windows XP service pack 3, 32 bit
Let’s say that you want a tone 7 seconds long, followed by 3 seconds of silence (10 seconds total duration).
Two methods come to mind:
Method 1
- Generate Menu > Tone. Set the type of tone that you want, the amplitude and a duration of 7 seconds and press OK.
- Edit > Move Cursor > To Track End (shortcut K)
- Generate Menu > Silence. Set the duration to 3 seconds and click OK.
Method 2
- Generate Menu > Tone. Set the type of tone that you want, the amplitude and a duration of 10 seconds and press OK.
- Select from 7 seconds to the end of the track (more details about ways to select audio: http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/audacity_selection.html)
- Edit > Remove Audio or Labels > Silence Audio (shortcut Ctrl+L)
Now here’s a clever thing that will make the whole thing quicker.
Apart from the very last silence (if you want a silence at the end), you don’t actually need to generate that “flat line” silence. You can just leave a gap.
- Generate the first tone,
- Zoom Out (information about zooming http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/zooming.html so that you can see where you want the next tone to start.
- Click on the track where you want the next tone to start. If you need the position to be exact you can adjust it by typing in the “Selection Start” box in the Selection Toolbar http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/man/selection_toolbar.html)
- Generate the next tone.
Steve. Many thanks for the two methods to create Tones and Pauses / Silence in sequence, also for the information about not needing the “flat line” silence.
Its seems so simple now.
