Abrupt occurrence of -9996 invalid device error

I have the dreaded ‘- 9996 invalid device’ problem, which occurred abruptly between a morning recording session and an afternoon attempt yesterday. The PC was off in the meantime. I’ve used Audacity for occasional web recording for years with it set to Host: Windows WASAPI, Speakers: stereo Naim DAC V1 and Recording Device: Naim DAC V1 loop-back and there has never been a problem, but suddenly it gave the invalid device error. I uninstalled and updated Audacity to 3.6.4, but the problem persists.
I have tried every variation possible with these three settings, and followed the web help page advice, but the error is still there.
Audio Device Info in the Apps own Help Section Diagnostics correctly identifies the recording set up I’ve always used, as above.
Any source, local or web, plays perfectly well via the Naim DAC output, as it always has, but Audacity now gives the 9996 error when trying to record it.
The desk top PC is an Intel i9-10940X 3.5 with 32 GB RAM, running updated Win 11 Pro recently updated to 24H2, but Audacity worked several times after the update.
Help much appreciated, Charles
