50+ minute MP3 played in 12 seconds

Windows 8
Audacity 2.1.1.exe

I have a 50+ minute MP3 file that I imported to Audacity. When I play it in Audacity, it plays a loud screeching sound in about 10 seconds. Please help. I’ve never used Audacity before.

Then it probably isn’t really an MP3.

You can try adding FFmpeg to your computer. The simplest way to make FFmpeg import the file is to Use File > Import > Audio… or File > Open…, then choose “FFmpeg-compatible files” in the “Files of type:” box.

If that does not help, you can obtain “MediaInfo” from http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download/Windows which will tell you what audio codec is in the file. Get the MediaInfo version without installer, because the installer may have malware or adware.

If Audacity doesn’t understand the compression format of a show (it’s probably not actually MP3), it will play the show without compression. So you can get the percent compression by dividing the two numbers. I get 300 to 1 compression which is way too high for a good sounding show or song. That makes this a surveillance or conformance recording. Are you law enforcement?
