Hey guys, I am new to the forum but really need help with figuring out how to add a 3rd and 4th mic in audacity using my steinberg ur44 audio interface. I have a podcast and want to have more than just two people on it. Any help would be amazing!!!
Audacity can only record from one “device” at a time.
For compatibility, manufacturers of 4 channel devices generally create split a 4 channel device into two 2-channel WDM device drivers. Some manufacturers also provide an additional “multi-channel” WDM device driver that gives access to all 4 channels at the same time. You need to select the multi-channel device driver (if there is one).
Unfortunately, some manufacturers don’t bother to provide a multi-channel WDM device driver, assuming that everyone will be using ASIO, but Audacity can’t ship with ASIO due to licensing issues.
I don’t have a Steinberg UR44, so I don’t know what drivers they provide. You will need to look through the settings in the Device Toolbar
(https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/device_toolbar.html)
to see if any combination of settings allow you to set the number of “recording channels” to 4.
“Audio Device Info” may help you: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/help_menu_diagnostics.html
