3.0.3 does not work

Installed 3.0.3 and removed 2.3.0. 3.0.3 does not work. Uninstalled 3.0.3 and reinstalled. What is the fix? Using Win 10. 64-bit. Computer is HP desktop with touch screen. one year old. Intel i5 processor.

3.0.3 does not work.

You need to get us closer than that. Audacity has a lot of moving parts. What doesn’t work? Did the install fail? Are you trying to record something difficult like Zoom?

Did Audacity throw any error messages?

Koz

File Edit Select View etc. are faded and not solid in color and do not function.
Symbols below File Edit Select etc. do not function.
None of the areas function.
Not recording. Doing editing of podcasts.
Upgraded because suggested I get the LUFS function.
Looking at downloads, 3.0.3 downloaded 4 times.
Deleted 3 of the 4.

Are you a restricted user on your machine? Are you installing Audacity on an internal drive? Audacity doesn’t much like External, Network or Cloud drives.

Koz

Did you get them from here?

https://www.audacityteam.org/

Are you installing in English?

Koz

Symbols below File Edit Select etc. do not function.

That could be important. The drop-down for File is there, but it’s gray and it doesn’t do anything?

That sounds exactly like a Windows permissions issue. I’m not a Windows elf, so we should wait for one to post.

Koz

I sometimes take these questions upside down. If somebody paid me a lot of money to force this to happen, how would I do it.

Audacity might do this if it didn’t think you were “real” (permissions issue) or it didn’t think the drive it was installed on was “real” (local). Or both.

Audacity usually insists on plain, ordinary installs. It plays games with system timing during editing and that can fall apart quickly if you have an odd install.

Koz

K: Installing in English. Internal drive. Not a restricted user. I’m “real.” When I loaded 2.3.0 last year no problem. Top line commands are gray and nothing happens. Didn’t notice https://www.audacityteam.org/. Thought I was on Audacity’s website. Makes a difference? If so, I’ll delete and start over. Advise? What’s an “odd” install? It’d help if there was a phone number with an “real” English speaking person on the other end. Off shoring tech support may save money but in the long run it’s a Public Relations Disaster.
Do you know why it downloaded 4x? If I activated all 4 it seems like that would really screw things up.
Right now I’m out of business until this gets resolved.
Thanks in advance for your help.

When I loaded 2.3.0 last year no problem.

Many of us stepped off Audacity 2.4.2 which worked pretty well onto the Audacity 3 series. Audacity 2.3.0 is pretty far back.

What’s an “odd” install?

OK, watch. You’re in the Windows forum but your bio claims GNU/Linux. Do you have two operating systems on your machine? That’s pretty unusual.

It’d help if there was a phone number with an “real” English speaking person on the other end. Off shoring tech support may save money but in the long run it’s a Public Relations Disaster.

It would, wouldn’t it? But that would mean we would be a Formal Help Desk instead of a Forum with users helping each other. That would also mean we would be paid software instead of free at the point of download.

We’re not a massive corporation. We just recently gave up our corporate headquarters at Land’s End, in Britain.

Do you know why it downloaded 4x? If I activated all 4 it seems like that would really screw things up.

It would yes. But since that doesn’t happen to anybody else, I’d say there was something odd about your machine—or the place you got the download from.

You still get it from here.

https://www.audacityteam.org/

Drill down to your operating system.

Koz

If I were facing your issues, I would
(1) Reboot my machine.
(2) Repeat the download - note that windows X64 gets downloaded automatically when you go to the web page.
(3) Repeat the installation - looking carefully for options to clear or reset the configuration.

looking carefully for options to clear or reset the configuration.

What he said.

The older Audacity installs used to leave preferences and settings behind when they updated or re-installed the software. The newer ones have a setting which removes preferences and settings and really, really starts over. That’s the option for you.

Koz

K: Have only one operating system. Don’t know where GNU/Linux came from. Will delete 3.0.3 and reload paying more attention. Will keep you posted.
Got to love your former corporate offices. Nothing like going “First Cabin.” It looks like you took “Mobile Devices” and “remote work” to new heights-- Pioneers in your field. Cheers

When you pass the screen with the [X] really, really start over option, can you do a screen grab?

Nothing like going “First Cabin.”

Or in this case, only cabin. We remain tight with the woman in the gift shop and snack bar. Past the obvious gifts and snacks, she has the WiFi.

Oh, and she’s the closest loo.

Koz

K: Success comes to those who wait. Got it working.
How? 1) Deleted 3.0.3 plus anywhere else I found a reference. Rebooted computer. 2) I’m guessing Micro-soft meeting might have been a problem. Didn’t close that window. Quit Micro-soft meetings since that is an option. It’s a real pain in the Arse when firing up computer. 3) Put into a new file C:/. Not the old one. 4) Changed/deleted Preferences when asked.

Ok, been playing in 3.0.3. What happened to the Loudness Normalization that was in 2.4.1? What takes it place? What happened to Limiter? What takes its place? Advise.

K: Everything turned to excrement. Yesterday 3.0.3 was up and running. Did a little recording and checked good. This am back to square one. Top line gray. Frustration doesn’t even begin to cover it.

K: Got 3.0.3 running again but through a Rube Goldberg system.
Effect menu. A few things missing. What took their place if anything? Advise.
