HI all, I have come back to Audacity to re-edit songs I exported from Audacity in 2007 on Windows. Now on Mac High Sierra with audacity-macOS-3.6.1-x86_64 running.
I have each song -a.aup file and its folder song -a_data (& all the 6 second clips are in there and i can hear them) . However I get the error - Error while processing/Users/jhi/Desktop/audacity2024/song -a_data/b00424.au Inserting silence.
Please can you help as these are the only digital copies of songs i wrote 30 years ago!
many thanks J.
As you found, the little .au files are about six seconds each and will play individually in Audacity. You probably also discovered that the filenames are scrambled. We really, really, really, really wish the Audacity developers had not done that. There’s the standing joke that the developer had never had to repair his daughter’s damaged musical performance.
However, here we are. You can’t go by the file names, but there are rules. If you find similar au files, please know that they alternate Left-Right-Left-Right in a stereo show. They also have sequential time and date stamps—assuming the project is not an edit.
If you’re holding a damaged and edited show. You’re stuck.
There is an additional curse. Audacity traditionally hates working on non-internal drives. Anything not inside the cabinet. Data management can be ratty, which sounds a lot like what you have. Are you editing these directly from a thumb drive or external drive or network drive, etc. Move the song to the internal drive and try again.
There are no records of anyone having done this, but it is possible to sit with strong coffee and individually re-assemble the AU files into the original show.
It’s a retirement project for one song.
It is strongly recommended that you do your archive or performance masters as WAV (Microsoft), not MP3 or Audacity Projects.

I know I went off the rails there. Your question is about repairing one single au file.
What happens when you try and play it? Is it a similar size to the others? If it’s intended to be silence, you may be able to theatrically work around it.

HI Koz thanks for the overview.actually i have the data files (about 20 songs) and the aup files. but they give the error when i try to import them into current Audacity. Maybe i should I try a legacy version? I dont think they are corrupted as i can pay each 6 second clip.
2nd thought - is there an Audacity file structure i should insert them to maybe, rather than directing audacity to Desktop etc?

All thoughts very gratefully received.
cheers J.
Classic Projects have the aup and the _data with the same name and have to be in the same location or folder to play.
However. Nobody wrote both names can’t be wrong.
Open an aup file in a text editor. Somewhere in the first three or four lines of code should be a setting for projname=“xxxxxxx_data”
The xxxxxx is the real name of the Project or show.
You should be able to click on the above computer code for a magnified view.

Hi Koz - i have now got the original files to load as projects into Audacity by using my windows 10 machine and loading audacity legacy versions 1.26 /2.00/3.00 upto 3.33. These will all open the aup files. (phew)
Versions 64 bit and 32 bit of: 3.6.1 /3.5.1/3.41 wont open and give the same original error.
Any thoughts please? (at least I can now export the songs as wav or aiff :))
Appreciate your help!
cheers J.
