2.4.2 Catalina - Unrecoverable Error

I recently upgraded to Catalina 10.15.6 (current as of this month) and cannot run Audacity 2.4.2. I get the dreaded “An unrecoverable error has occurred during startup” and then it quits. (Running on a late 2016 iMac 5K i7 with single SSD)

Before upgrading, I removed the old version of Audacity and cleaned out the folder under Application Support.

After upgrading, I downloaded 2.4.2 and installed. I do see that it does create the Audacity folder in App Support, along with an audacity.cfg file and an empty SessionData folder, but that’s it. Only the Audacity menu appears when I launch it, and I can’t interact with it at all. Once I OK the error message, it quits and there’s no further way I can interact with it.

I haven’t tried a restart to see if that helps, but generally Audacity (from what I remember) doesn’t require a restart to install properly. All of my other apps are running smoothly with no permissions issues or anything like that.

Are there log files or something I can generate to send to an Admin or someone to look at this? While I don’t use Audacity as frequently as I used to, I do need it for some upcoming projects and don’t want to have to switch to a different audio editing app.

Something interesting… I just tried this to see if it would work. I have a separate user profile (the default admin one) that I’ve never run Audacity with, and the app DOES startup just fine using that profile. But not using my normal personal macOS profile/login. My normal profile does have admin privileges, so I doubt it’s that. But anyways, something else in the profile is messing it up (and I really do not wish to have to switch to a new profile - that will cause lots of other problems tbh).

Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanks!

Try that.
