10.14.4 Recovery

I am running Mac OS 10.14.4 - I did not realize…
So, I opened up Audacity and recorded two super important conversations. When I went to export the files Audacity crashed. I reopened Audacity and there are my two files with an option to recover them in the Automatic Crash Recovery screen. If I select Recover Files, the files show as recovered and then before I can do anything the Debug report “Audacity” pops up and I can not access the files. So frustrating! I see them both recovered, but do not have time to play them or otherwise access them. What can I do to listen to those two files?! It’s urgent and important - all guidance appreciated!

10.14.4 is a beta operating system from Apple - Audacity 2.3.0 is known not to run properly on 10.14.4 (the upcoming 64-bit 2.3.1 does run properly).

I think you have a couple of options

  1. revert your macOS to 10.14.3 (that’s what I’m running)

  2. wait for Audacity 2.3.1 to be released (hopefully by the end of the month - but no guarantees)

It’s important to understand that beta software including beta OSs should really not be used for important production work - betas are designed for testing not real-life use.

An Audacity project isn’t only a file, it’s a file AND a folder. The folder contains lots of blocks of audio data in a directory tree, and the file contains instructions that tell Audacity how to create the project with those blocks of data.

We don’t test on pre-release operating systems, as they are usually too unstable for any meaningful testing, so I can only tell you what other macOS beta users have reported.

Early reports were that Audacity would not run on macOS 10.14.4 beta.
More recent reports indicate that Audacity 2.3.0 will run on the latest version of macOS 10.14.4 beta.

So, if you are very lucky, updating your operating system to the latest beta version of macOS 10.14.4, “may” allow you to run Audacity 2.3.0 and recover the project. However, please be warned that updating macOS 10.14.4 carries a risk of totally wiping out all of your data (see: Don't run the iOS 12, macOS 10.14 Mojave betas if you value your data | AppleInsider)

The reports I read here on the Forum are that 2.3.0 crashes on 10.14.4beta - but our 2.3.1alpha runs ok on 10.14.4 - so I’m confused

I understand that I am in uncharted territory (beta Mac OS, didn’t read about incompatibility in advance, etc), and that I made a mistake by trying to run Audacity in the beta Mac OS.

Given that, do you have suggestions for how to access those sound files? They show up before the Debug report as recovered. The Debug report sits on top of them and won’t let me access them. Is there a way to avoid the Debug report?

As I wrote previously:

Thank you, WC. I chose option 1 because I need these files urgently and it worked.
Much appreciate!

Great - glad that worked for you,

And thanks for reporting back.
