I'm writing a ... video game ... "mechanicizing" the voice somewhat ... DBlue crusher is a free plugin that works in Audacity on Windows it can do stereotypical retro video game effects ... In your case for the croaky effect (without bit-crush) try these settings ....

Paul-L's declicker plugin on default takes the worst off it.
It sounds like handling-noise.
(it's not one-take, it could be them repeatedly handling the device to pause it at the end of takes).

Plektron Devicer is a free plugin which works in Audacity on Windows.
It has a range of audio device simulations, including "Hi-Fi Stereo".
(The "surround speakers" preset #14 may be what you're looking for )

Harmonic notch-filter , (a/k/a de-vuvuzela), is another option, but the voice will gain a comb-effect ...

... I tried compression and normalization aswell but that didnt do much for me, (maybe im doing it wrong). Anyone know how I can tone down these synths? Just compress parts of the spectrum, the synths are mostly above 3kHz ... Inevitably that It will attenuate some of the voice which occupies that ...
