... a look at the drop-down menu near the Meters. Is 'Stereo Mix' (or 'What U Hear' or 'Wav Out', etc) listed? That's the source you want. If it's not, ... source). I've got installed sound driver that was on the MoBo CD in "vista" directory - must be ok. In settings there is only microphone, but I need "What U Hear".

You'll have to set up your soundcard to monitor the input. I have never used Vista, but the first thing to do (from what I hear) is to update the soundcard drivers. Apparently the default drivers are crap. After that, you'll have to look in the Control Panel. ...

I have WaveOutMix selected as my recording device (the What U Hear equivalent) because that's my only option besides Microphone. And whenever I select Microphone, the only sound I get when I record is loud, high-pitched, blood-curdling distortion. I've ...

You've got the wrong input selected. You should have Mic In or Line In selected. You've probably got it set to Stereo Mix (or What U Hear, etc.).
