Audacity uses your computers sound system drivers. Some drivers allow Audacity to control them, but an increasing number do not, in which case you must use the Windows interface (Windows Control Panel / Windows Mixer), or ...

Ah, that explains the greyed-out input selector. So is the fact there's no wave option in the Audio I/O tab solely down to the X-fi drivers? With XP there was a wave option, but what u hear seems to do what I want. When I had the X-fi installed ...
