"Stereo Mix" and "What U Hear" are creations of the hardware, drivers, ... help, either. Total Recorder is available on Vista and I wouldn't be shocked to find it available ...

Go into the Windows Control Panel and make sure that "Stereo Mix" is available as a recording option.
