... Drag the whole audacity folder to the trash. Restart Audacity and it should start from First Birthday -- when you first installed it. Did that help? Koz

... If not it will probably be best to install "padevchooser" and "pavumeter" (available through Synaptic) as these will help you to configure PulseAudio correctly.
