AFAIK there is no metadata in the .AU files to help.
If you were using Audacity 1.2.x, the files that are created during recording are in numerical order. If using Audacity 1.3.x they are not, and the only thing left to help you is the time stamp, (which I guess is no longer available?)

... not to 1.3.12 so I'm totally confused about what you mean. Just in case you have a rogue version of Audacity installed, could you look in "Help menu > About Audacity" and give the exact "version name and number" from the first tab and include the "build information" ...

prevent time shift when pasting
With Preference unchecked for "Editing clips can move other clips" the track shifts when pasted. The segement is only a few seconds and I was pasting into a blank area of track. I read the help on pasting but did not understand "enough room for the pasted audio"

I'm not sure of this, but I think there's no metadata in the files that will help put them in order... You could do that by the file creation timestamp, but I'm guessing you don't have that available either... What audacity version and which operating system was ...
