What "other applications" see the DM1000? What Mac and OS X version are you using?

Check that everything is connected and reboot.
Wait for the computer to completely boot up before you do anything.
Then follow the instructions here to open up "Sounds" in the Windows Control Panel and make the USB device visible and enabled.
