Unfortunately neither solution worked. Compressor/leveller help a bit but I'm not sure they are the right tools to use.

Which version of Windows are you using?
Which version of Audacity are you using (look in Audacity "Help menu > About Audacity")

You omitted two important pieces of information: operating system and audacity version. Without knowing that we can't provide any further help...
For modern OSes audacity 1.3.12 (beta) is recommended. For windows 7 check Trebor's link.

... just had a thought .... would upgrading to the 1.3 beta version help? Definitely! If you're on a modern laptop you probably have Windows 7 or Vista. The 1.3.12 version is the recommended version for those operating systems. You can get it from here: http://audacityteam.org/download/beta_windows

... phones but not record however, if I talk into the headphone mic that gets recorded. The minidisc player only has a USB out. Thanks for trying to help, hope that all makes sense.

... and over time I’ve found that we have very few service shops clued up on aspects of these skills. I managed to record from AC for example with help online but no-one locally had anything to offer. I will probably have the same problem getting the ST 458 serviced. Googling will probbably help ...

... Mix in Recording Devices even after clicking Show Disabled Devices and I have no problem with audio driver, as it is up to date...can anyone help?
