Since you already have an MP3 file, you probably should be using a different editor. It's too easy to cause sound damage by doing it in Audacity.

the file was about 5 hours. the file was paused at different times and then stopped. The recording is voices in front of a microphone.

... recording stereo. 44100Hz, 32 bit float. I've tried other tapes with the same result. Strange that the first recording was OK then problems. Any help is appreciated.
