... it should be easy to batch convert them to other format using mplayer/mencoder. You should be able to find rpm packages of it for fedora. I can help you with the syntax if you have any trouble.

... its drivers to the latest ones specific to XP and to your particular computer model might cure the problem. See Updating Sound Device Drivers for help. The drivers should be supplied by the motherboard manufacturer if possible. Realtek do have generic drivers on their site but that would be second-best ...

... Do the students have access to any local disk space? Could you check the exact version number of Audacity that you are now using (see "Help > About Audacity")

What operating system are you using and which version of Audacity? (look in "Help menu > About Audacity" for the full version number)

If it's a desktop computer, you should be able to find the Stereo Line-In connection. It's normally blue and it has the fan symbol with the arrow pointing in.

You don't need the USB adapter at all.
