If you can't figure it out from what I've posted, thanks for your help anyway! I have a guy who can at least diagnose my sound card -- I assume that is what you meant by "sound files?" I will take it to him tomorrow - he doesn't know Audacity, though ...

You are a genius! I had no idea I wasn't saving an audio file, that makes sense now. Thank you for the easy to follow breakdown and for the option to copy on import. I (obviously) would not have known that. Thank you so very much for your help!

I forgot to ask... What version of Audacity are you running? You posted in the 1.2.x section, but if you're on Ubuntu 10.04 you're probably running audacity 1.3.12 or similar. Please confirm that... You can get the audacity version from the Help menu -> About.
