what are you trying to record? live stream or external? can you hear what you are trying to record? does audacity record blank/ flat line?

... Then making manual notations on a sheet of blank music paper! Very time consuming, and the noteation is not very accurate for others to read! Any help would be most appreciated. If Audacity doesn't allow for this, can you advise me on where to go for software with a limited budget?

AHHHHHH. Thanks for the help. It turns out that the output was in fact, routed to play through the headphone jack in my preamp, and NOT the speakers on my laptop as I had originally thought.
