... quite a few effects as standard, so have a go with those first and see what they all do. If you get stuck, Audacity includes a full manual in the Help menu. Later on, if you find that there's other effects that you need that are not included in Audacity you can start looking at other plug-ins.

... like if i DO record something can i add distortion to a clean bass line, or add drums to it? Sorry if these are dumb questions but i need all the help i can get here. Thanks for your time.

Which version of Audacity are you using? (Look in "Help menu > About Audacity") Do you have Audacity "full screen" or as a smaller window? (the toolbars will shuffle around to fit the available space). The Toolbar options are in the ...

The bits at the top of the screen, like the input bar and the volume and recording levels bar are in different places than normal.
The volume level used to be on the left, now it's on the right.
